KITZBUEHEL _ For the 3rd year in a row, Van Oossanen Naval Architects of the Netherlands took top honors at the 2018 Boat International Design & Innovation Awards. The jury praised its Fast Displacement Hull Form for letting the 50m Heesen-built Home (photo) go to “16 knots or better with the least horsepower of any of the finalists.”

It reviewed 30 hulls. Van Oossanen also won in 2016 (Ruya, Alia Yachts) and in 2017 (Galactica Super Nova, Heesen).

The award crowns Van Oossanen’s work in narrowing the gap between displacement and planing vessels and pushing yachts and commercial boats to high speeds with less power, more efficiently. Its patented FDHF also suits commercial vessels. The Port of Rotterdam operates a patrol craft with an FDHF hull, + another Van Oossanen fuel-saving patent: a Hull Vane®, an underwater spoiler. In vessels of 15m and up, the FDHF achieves fuel savings up to 20%. The Fast Displacement XL hull, unveiled at Monaco in 2017, gives long yachts of 50m more deck space still within the 500GT volume limit.

The FDHF generates efficient cruising at high and low speeds. This is further enhanced in hybrid yachts, like ‘Home’ (exterior design Omega Architects).  In diesel-direct, Home burns 98 liters of fuel/hr. at 12 knots and only 57 liters at 10 knots. Its twin 804HP MTU engines deliver a top speed of 16.3 knots. In diesel-electric propulsion, Home cruises at 9 knots. Van Oossanen’s work on hull shapes halves installed power, saving owners money and making yachtbuilders more competitive.

The company also supports builders with an online shop where they can submit their hull concept. “We then analyze that for them,” says Managing Director Niels Moerke. Be wary of bare-hull building, says Moerke. “Want to increase efficiency and onboard comfort? Then take a step back. Are you building a displacement, semi-displacement or fast planning hull? Also, power, stability, layout, construction and weight come into play. Each can be calculated.” /
