Alucraft quality in action – Alu specialist towers over America’s Cup

MAKKUM, September 2017 ~ At the 2017 America’s Cup, Freddie Bloemsma loomed large. When he ran Bloemsma Aluminiumbouw, he built 3 of the 9 J-Class yachts that raced in the margin of the AC, including Topaz (upper photo, front).

And Alucraft, his current company, built Topaz’ 10.5m chase boat (lower photo) to the exacting design standards of race organizers.

“It had to be fast, seaworthy. It had to have Ullman suspension seats, a detachable bimini and a large foredeck for the sails,” says Bloemsma. “The foredeck bollard can be removed so it cannot damage the sails. The boat had to fit into a standard container. With the trailer, its total weight stayed below 3,500 kilos.” En route to the J-Class races, the chase boat survived a rough baptism: Bloemsma sailed it from Antigua to St. Barths in Beaufort-7!

alucraft02Bloemsma has been building aluminum sailing and motor yachts for 30 years. He gave the chase boat a frame of high-quality aluminum topped by a tube of Hypalon, a synthetic rubber noted for its resistance to chemicals, temperature extremes and UV radiation. It has 2 outboard Mercury Verado engines of 200HP each.

Bloemsma learned his trade from his father, a pioneer in aluminum boat building. In 1993, he began his own company. It was half-finished when he got his first order: the hull of a 33m Hoek-design. Next came a 42m Holland Jachtbouw yacht, a string of J-Classes _ Lionheart, Topaz, Rainbow and Svea _ and commissions from superyacht builders Amels and Feadship.

Bloemsma sold his yard in 2009, wary that growth comes at the expense of concessions, and started up Alucraft. “I wanted to maintain quality,” he says, “not compete on price. It was our yachts’ quality that got us our clients. At Alucraft, Bloemsma says, “we keep things small scale on purpose. We focus on custom-building to maintain a high level of quality, from tenders to superyachts.”
