LELYSTAD, June 2017 ~ A few years back, members of the oh-so-posh New York Yacht Club began looking for a one-design racer to serve as a club boat. It had to be an attractive craft that appealed to young sailors. But also, nothing too extreme.
“It was an honor to fill the order for such a prestigious yachting club,” says Thijs van Riemsdijk of DNA Performance Sailing. His company, a unit of Holland Composites BV, has scored an order for 5 carbon, foiling TF10 trimarans _ a 32-ft one-design, folding trimaran for inshore and coastal racing.
Van Riemsdijk has admirable designs under his belt. The GC32 or AC45 were a tad radical, but have foils. “Our G4 cat was a candidate but cannot be trailered. Failing to find an existing boat, the NYYC consulted different designers and settled on a foiling trimaran design by Morelli & Melvin,” says Van Riemsdijk
The NYYC initially wanted a US-built TF10. “In the end, they realized that was impossible. These are complex boats. We wanted the TF10 to be part of our series. We are the exclusive builder,” says Van Riemsdijk.
TF stands for Trimaran Foiling and 10 refers to a 10m boat length that actually becomes almost 11 meters. The craft has a 7m beam, a 2.55m draft and fits on a 40-ft. trailer or a 40ft. flat bed.
Interestingly, there is no netting between the hulls but a fixed carbon cover that provides strength and stiffness offers the crew more comfort. The carbon TF10 has a Nomex honeycomb center and high-density foam where reinforcing is needed. DNA used prepreg carbon material. “It makes the boat strong, stiff and light,” says Van Riemsdijk. “Prepreg renders ample control during the build process and lets you work very accurately.”
Recently, DNA also won an order for rudders and boards for the Olympic-classed Nacra-17 cat. “Since our founding 25 years ago we have been working with high-quality materials and production processes,” says Van Riemsdijk. “Working with prepreg carbon means a significant pre-production investment. In 1992, we were among the first in the world to execute large parts and bare hulls in carbon prepreg.”
DNA is the high-performance sailing division of Holland Composites, a composite engineering and manufacturing company. It taps into the foiling revolution unleashed by the 2013 America’s Cup. Aside from the TF-10, DNA makes the single-handed 18ft (5.49m) F1, a fast, feather-weight A-class cat, the 41.8 ft. (12.74m) G4 high-performance cat and the 46ft F4 one-design cat for coastal and offshore racing.
