Dutch agree to upgrade maritime education across the board

ROTTERDAM _ The Netherlands 16 maritime schools and colleges have agreed to jointly upgrade and streamline their curricula across the board to attract more students.

The Dutch maritime sector _ 17,200 companies employing 271,500 people in shipbuilding, yacht construction, fishing and half a dozen other sectors _ is at pains to secure an able workforce to remain competitive.

It is an urgent undertaking. Reflecting that urgency is that all Dutch maritime education schools have joined the initiative to improve the quality of _ and access to _ maritime courses. The aim is to make curricula dovetail better, step up monitoring of the quality of education, focus more on sustainability and attract better qualified teachers.
