AMSTERDAM _ A 42m motor yacht, built in Amsterdam in 1954 and resembling rust bucket until recently, is undergoing a mega-makeover at Feadship.
Motor yacht Istros, says Feadship, will get a new aluminum superstructure, a new engine room with twin C18 main engines, a C4.4 diesel generator, a Capstone DC560 gas turbine generator and “a family-oriented, child-friendly interior “mixing the contemporary with the classic in a warm, Scandinavian style.”
When it was launched 65 years ago, Istros dazzled the yachting media. Ordered by a Greek shipping family, it left one journalist awestruck by the violet-blue bathrooms, the advanced radar system and _ steady yourself now! _ a white telephone to “call people anywhere in the world from wherever in the world the yacht may be.”
A first restoration, several years ago, failed for lack of money. Then, a new owner reached out to Feadship.
The Dutch custom yacht builder started on the project in 2018, in Malta, by removing the superstructure. The boat was then taken to the Netherlands where the new Istros will be launched in 2020.
