Moonen declared bankrupt, but fights on

DEN BOSCH – A Dutch court has declared Moonen Yachts Holding BV bankrupt after its owner, Mexico’s largest steelmaker Altos Hornos de Mexico, was found unable to meet its financial obligations.

The ruling extends to Moonen Yachts Services BV, Moonen Shipyards BV and Moonen Brokerage BV. It followed an early July announcement by Moonen CEO Johan Dubbelman that he was in advanced negotiations with a new, unnamed financier.

In 2015, Moonen was briefly granted protection from creditors a first time. In 2018, it launched Brigadoon, a 36m (118ft.) Rene van der Velden-designed yacht that won a World Superyacht Award.

Last December, Moonen began spec-building a sister ship for which Diana Yacht Design and Van der Velden handled the naval architecture and Studio Indigo of London designed the interieur. The bare hull showed up at Moonen in June. The aluminum superstructure was to be installed this month and the launch was scheduled for early 2020
