AMSTERDAM – Niels Klarenbeek, 42, has been named director of the Metstrade show. He succeeds Irene Dros who resigned Feb. 20 after 18 years in which she turned the annual event into the world’s largest trade show of marine equipment, materials and systems
A 15-year veteran of trade shows, Klarenbeek takes the helm April 14 ,at the height of a coronavirus pandemic that is dragging the world into a global recession.
Klarenbeek is an avid sailor. He studied Business Economics at the Netherlands’ Hanze University of Applied Sciences. “I am delighted to have been granted this opportunity to become director of METSTRADE,” he said in a statement.
“Its globally recognized reputation, comprehensive everything-under-one-roof concept and unique atmosphere are facets which I have respected over many years.”
Klarenbeek has held sales and business development positions at trade events, including Aquatech Amsterdam, the biennial trade show for process, drinking and wastewater, and Rematec, a platform for the automotive parts remanufacturing industry with trade shows in Amsterdam, Las Vegas and Guangzhou.
In addition to METSTRADE, Klarenbeek will be closely involved with IBEX, the marine industry’s largest technical trade event in North America. It is owned and produced by the National Marine Manufacturers Association and RAI Amsterdam.

METSTRADE is the world’s largest trade exhibition for equipment, materials and systems for the international leisure marine industry. Organized by RAI Amsterdam and the International Council of Marine Industry Associations ICOMIA), it targets yacht builders, naval architects, refit yards, distributors, dealers, wholesalers, captains, marina owners and marine equipment manufacturers worldwide. The 2020 event will take place Nov. 17-19 at RAI Amsterdam.
