ZAANDIJK, May 2017 ~ Times are good right now for Kees van de Stadt. “I do a lot of work these days in the Netherlands and China,” says the Satellite Yacht Design owner. He works on mid-sized yachts, keeps his studio compact and loves his freedom.
Since founding his studio in 1996, he has delivered an amazing range of designs. Early on, he lured passage makers with his mantra that sailing yachts must not just be safe and fast, but also comfortable. “You must be able to move easily about it,” says Van de Stadt.
He prefers to design light-weight craft of aluminum or composite material. Sailing yachts are Van de Stadt’s passion yet appealing motor boat designs have also come off his boards, including the Aquarius, a 10m launch, and the Wildcat 1210, a motor-powered catamaran.
For sail projects in China, he designed the Ten, winner of the 2017 Hainan Regatta, a 12ft dinghy, racing yachts up to 65ft and the DC20, a cruiser that can be outfitted with a retractable gennaker boom. Now being built: The Icon-48, a composite yacht of which at least 15 will be constructed. Recent projects also included the 49ft Orion (above) and the Saffier Se 37 Lounge (left), a new high-end daysailer Saffier Yachts announced at the 2017 Boot Düsseldorf.
Van de Stadt has a wary eye on the future. “The market is changing,” he says. He sees large serial-building yards turning out yachts of 60ft and more. “They aim for a relatively small market segment which is also a market for my custom projects,” he says.
Van de Stadt specializes in working with very advanced software. “Keeping up with technology is time-consuming,” he says. “But this is still a great profession. I love creating something with a client, especially when I get a message later from the ocean that reads, ‘She sails wonderfully!”
Satellite Yacht Design was founded in 1996. Its work meets strict safety, performance and comfort requirements. The studio designs motor and sailing yachts and works in different materials to meet the needs and wishes of the end user.
