NOARDBURGUM _ In a vast understatement, the yard’s site says much “has happened since the 1960s when the first Lauwersmeer yacht was built under a tree.” That clunky, unassuming open steel boat set the Super Lauwersmeer yard on an amazing journey.
Today, the yard builds comfortable, customized steel displacement yachts in 4 models from 42 to 52ft. (12.8 to 15.8m). Topping its portfolio is the Discovery series that boasts aft cabin, open cockpit, flybridge and cabrio versions.
At the 2018 HISWA in-Water show (Sep. 5 through 9) Super Lauwersmeer will premier its Discovery-47 OC (photos). At 14.3m, the Discovery-47 OC is only a foot bigger than the 46 OC, but feels much more spacious thanks to the heightening of the hull and super structure (by 15 cm, well over 1ft.) and a large glassed-in saloon.
The yard says its Discovery 47 OC features the largest owner’s cabin in its class. The length and width are impressive, courtesy of a full, plumb bow. The heightened hull creates lots of headroom in the master bedroom as well as ample walk and storage space. The skylight at the top further intensifies the spatial feeling.
Despite the raising of the hull and superstructure, the Super Lauwersmeer 47 OC has the same 3.5m (11.5ft.) clearance height of its 46ft. sibling.
The lengthened swimming platform is part of the lounge area. The lengthened sides ensure the connection to the cockpit. A huge benefit is found in the placement of hull doors at the starboard and port sides. These facilitate easier boarding when the Discovery 47 OC is docked.
