GROOT-AMMERS _ In the early 1900s, a new class of yachts appeared on New York City waters ferrying tycoons from their tony estates to their Manhattan offices and back. Today, Zeelander Yachts works hard to revive those gracious “commuter yachts.”
Founded in 2002, the Dutch company has just unveiled a new 72ft (22m) flagship, a luxury, latter-day commuter yacht made of superyacht-quality materials.
With a starting price of €3.3 million (+ VAT), it is a project for discriminating clients which explains why Zeelander spent years to deliver the highest degree in yacht design, function and construction detail.
Zeelander is one of a handful of Dutch yards that build ever longer, ever more luxurious superyacht chase boats. Zeelander launched its inaugural Z44 at the 2008 Monaco Yacht Show. In the following years it sold more than 30 Z44s in both Europe and the US. By 2015, Zeelander sold its first Z55.
Director Leonardo van den Berg says the Zeelander design has evolved incrementally, much like that of Porsches has. “A legendary icon is what we envision for the Z72,” he says. “We believe true yacht building is a form of art. The Z72 is the epitome of our craft.”
Marketing Coordinator Floris Koopmans says in design matters, his yard works closely with Zeelander owners. “They know what they like,” he says. “When they share their experiences, we know that no one has a better sense of how the boats are used. That discussion has led the way to the Z72.”
The new flagship is the fruit of brainstorming with a Zeelander Yachts client who remains unidentified except that it is someone “who loves a good party!”
The Z72 is very open and airy, has a large convertible sunroof and a retractable aft sliding window. The wheelhouse offers virtually uninterrupted 360-degree views courtesy of a huge windshield and big w0indows. The dining table is behind the helm bench. A wide settee aft and a 2-seat bench to port serve the table. The galley is at the aft end of the interior. There is copious stowage in lockers and high-end appliances.
The curving transom folds back and the backrest of the aft settee folds down to create a 10 sq. m platform that serves as the teak beach at anchor. The first Z72 comes without a jacuzzi, but it is optional and can be installed on the aft deck instead of the sunbed. The jacuzzi could then be closed to return to a sunbed.
